    Vidya Balan was born on 1 January 1979 and is an Indian actress. She started a career in Hindi cinema and received several awards, including a National Film Award, six Filmfare Awards and six Screen Awards. In 2014, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Shri. Vidya is known for her protagonists and has been recognized in the media for revolutionizing the concept of a heroine of the Hindi film.

    Vidya Balan was born in Mumbai to parents of Tamil origin. His father, P. R. Balan, is the Executive Vice President of Digicable and his mother, Saraswathy Balan, is a housewife. According to Vidya, they speak a mixture of Malayalam and Tamil at home. His older sister, Priya Balan, works in advertising. The actress Priyamani is her first cousin.

    Vidya grew up in the Chembur suburb of Mumbai and attended St. Anthony’s Girls High School. From an early age, she aspires to a career in cinema and is inspired by the work of actors Shabana Azmi and Madhuri Dixit. At the age of 16, she played in the first season of Hum Paanch’s sitcom Ekta Kapoor under the name of Radhika, a teenager with glasses. After the show ended, Vidya turned down an offer by director Anurag Basu to play on a television soap opera because she wanted to focus on a film career. Her parents were supportive of the decision but encouraged her to finish school first. She attended Saint-Xavier College to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and then obtained a Master’s degree at the University of Mumbai.

    Vidya aspired to a career in film at an early age and had her first role in the Hum Paanch sitcom in 1995. She pursued her master’s degree in sociology at the University of Mumbai and made several attempts to make a career in the cinema. She later performed in television commercials and music videos. In 2003, she made her film debut as a protagonist of the independent Bengali drama Bhalo Theko. In 2005, Vidya received praise for his first Hindi film, the drama Parineeta, and followed with a leading role in the comedy film Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006).

    This breakthrough was followed by roles in romantic comedies Heyy Babyy (2007) and Kismat Konnection (2008) who had negative reviews. Vidya has established herself as the lead actress of Hindi cinema, playing five consecutive, critically acclaimed roles in the 2009 Paa drama, the 2010 Ishqiya black comedy, the 2011 No One Killed Jessica semi-biopic thriller, the biopic The Dirty. Photo and thriller 2012 Kahaani. She followed with a series of films that performed poorly at the box office, although her performance in Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh (2016) was hailed. That changed in 2017 when she played the role of radio jockey in the hit comedy drama Tumhari Sulu.

    In addition to acting in films, Vidya promotes humanitarian causes and supports women’s empowerment. She initially criticized her fluctuating weight and her “questionable” sense of clothing, but was later credited in the media for “not turning into a conventional slot”. She became a member of the Indian Central Board of Film Certification in 2017. Vidya is married to film producer Siddharth Roy Kapur.
